First post.

The J. Sterkenburg Reading Contest begins!!!

Basically, with Justin's nudging, a reading contest has began. You read books, write a small review and see how many you complete at the end of the year. Pretty sweet. I am digging all this goal setting. I usually don't do that or at least not follow through.

Here are the rules if you want to join in:

1. 100 page minimum

2. To get credit for a book you must write a review at least a paragraph long.

3. Reading can be grandfathered in back to Dec 25th to account for Christmas gifts we started reading already.

My first book was Coffee with The Buddha by Joan Duncan Oliver.

As most of you may notice, the foreword is by THE Annie Lennox. To be honest, didn't read the foreword. I usually do. If the book needs explanation or whatever...then maybe that shit should have been in the book. Whatever, I'll probably go back and read the book this year again and when I do, I'll read the foreword.

As for the book, it was great. The style of the "Coffee with..." series is a made up conversation between the author and the subject being written about in order to grasp the basics of that individual and/or their work, or in this case, teachings. The book also started off with a brief history of The Buddha's life from riches to rags which gave way to his teachings.

Fun fact: The Buddha left his wife and kid in order to find enlightenment saying that they would understand. Hmmm....

Good read. I recommend.
